Half Shell in South End
Growing up in Maryland, there was no shortage of restaurants serving succulent seafood. Similarly, moving to Virginia Beach expanded my palate to the delicacy of oysters. I thought my days of indulging in seafood feasts were over when I moved to Charlotte, then I discovered several restaurants that source fresh fare from the coast. Charlotte’s newest seafood restaurant, Half Shell, opened earlier this year as a go-to spot for oysters and other seafood specialties.
Half Shell in South End
Half Shell officially opened February 2026 in South End’s Linea complex. The restaurant, developed by restaurateur Jeff Van Dyke and his son, Connor, is a raw bar showcasing premium oysters from both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Half Shell’s in-house oyster specialists, trained through oyster sommelier courses from the Oyster Master Guild, expertly curate the restaurant’s oyster selections for variety and seasonality.
During this visit, my friend made reservations in advance for our party of six. While the weather was beautiful, we opted for a table inside. However, the covered outdoor patio is a great option if you’re in the mood for alfresco dining.
The inside of the restaurant features seating at the bar, as well as additional seating at the raw bar where you can get a closer look at the oyster-shucking action. The adjacent dining room boasts comfortable booths, four- and six-top tables, plus more seating against a banquette.
Dinner at Half Shell
Half Shell’s drink menu features beer, wine and cocktails. While I was tempted by the Caviar Martini, served with a pearl spoon of caviar, I decided to sip the refreshing Blackberry Mojito on that warm evening. For dinner, we ordered a good variety of the menu.

Smoked Trout Dip
Calamari Rhode Island Style
I started my meal with the Smoked Trout Dip, one of several shareable plates on Half Shell’s menu. The dip itself was a bit too creamy for me, but the salmon roe on top helped add more of that fish flavor that I wanted. The Smoked Trout Dip is served with plain Ritz crackers, which I would love to see Half Shell elevate a bit with maybe some Old Bay dusted on top. That might be the Marylander in me though.
Two friends split the Calamari Rhode Island Style. What differentiates Rhode Island-style calamari from others is the addition of hot cherry or banana peppers to create a spicier dish. The calamari are lightly battered and fried, resulting in a beautiful golden-brown color, and served with lemon-garlic aioli.
One of my friends is a shrimp cocktail aficionado and ordered the Raw Bar Sampler, which includes raw oysters, shrimp cocktail and the chef’s choice – which was a ceviche that day. Her review of the shrimp cocktail and ceviche was that it was “fine,” but she said the oysters were good.
Two of my friends selected the Hot Lobster Roll. Served Connecticut style, with warm butter instead of mayo, this lobster roll was packed with claw and knuckle meat. I went for the Chilled Lobster Roll, which is Maine style. I’m a mayo girl so I always gravitate towards a seafood salad with mayo and celery. While this lobster roll was also filled very well, I was jealous that the hot roll was made up of those large chunks of meat while the chilled roll had some large chunks and other shredded pieces of lobster. Overall, I would definitely order either one of these rolls again, depending on if I’m in the mood for hot or cold.

Half Shell’s dinner menu also includes a selection of poke bowls, shrimp sandwiches, fish and chips, seared scallops and the Fresh Fish of the Day. If you really want to indulge in a seafood feast for the table, order the Half Shell Tower or The Pearl, complete with oysters, shrimp cocktail, crab claws and the chef’s choice.
While seafood is the star of the menu at Half Shell, non-seafood eaters can order options such as steak frites, the jerk chicken sandwich and a smash burger, which looked like it could’ve been smashed a bit more.
Half Shell Oyster Happy Hour
Monday through Thursday, from 3-6 p.m., order half-off oysters during Half Shell’s Oyster Happy Hour. Perfect for an after-work treat, slurp your choice of briny or sweet oysters for half the price. I’ll definitely be back for happy hour so I can try the chargrilled oysters (if applicable for the discount) or a tasting flight from the in-house oyster specialists. A dirty martini would go great with either.
